I’m new to reloading and am trying to get a good Hunting & general purpose load for Hornady XTP .357 Magnum 180 gr.

I’m shooting a Ruger 77/357 18 1/2″, Winchester 94 Trapper 16″ & a S&W 686 + 6″.

Of the powders listed in the Hornady reloading manual, only the IMR 4227 is readily available here in Jacksonville, FL. Shooting the maximum load of 12.3 gr seemed pretty WEAK/MILD compared to the factory Doubletap 180 gr hardcast bullets.

From the 77/357, the groups were good from both. The Doubletap 180 gr groups were approximately 6″ higher at 50 yards.

I don’t think anyone here would recommend going above what the manual calls for. To me, going above published data is both dangerous and foolish.

BUT For What It’s Worth, if you look at the pistol data in the same book (Hornady Manual #9) on page 792, it shows a slightly higher max load.

Personally I’d load up a few in various loads and work on discovering what groups the best. If you find a particular load weight that groups the best, that’s your hunting load.
Take a look at the ladder test sticky on this forum. It was EXTREMELY helpful for me.

reload .357 Mag, but I don’t run 180 grain bullets, and I don’t use IMR 4227. IMR 4227 is a good magnum load, but the powder is so slow that you won’t see bullet speeds anywhere near what you will with a better choice of powder. Out of a 6″ barrel with AA #9, I can get 1370fps with a 158 grain bullet, and 1200fps with a 180 grain bullet. The 158 grain bullet is absolutely more bullet than I need for hunting deer.

started out reloading for the .44 magnum, and you can scoop up a complete case of IMR 4227, full to the brim, sit a bullet on it, compress it, and shoot it, with out a problem. But that’s not a .357 mag with a 180 grain bullet, so don’t try this with your gun. Win 296 is another great magnum powder. I recommend that no matter what you do, stick to what’s in the book. If you ain’t got enough speed for the bullet you want to shoot, then find a more suitable powder.

I went looking around at some of the “357 magnum forums”, and discovered that most of the information you get there is well over the max load. Please don’t go there!

And I just have to ask, why did you decide to go with a 180 grain bullet, before you looked at ballistics, and load data? I’m seeing a lot of new reloaders do this. They grab a box of bullets, that is an unusual weight, and then start trying to find load data on it.
