Aliant Sport Pistol
Precision and action shooters need consistent, clean-burning propellant that lets them perform to their peak when a competition is on the line. New Alliant Powder® Sport Pistol delivers on these demands with extremely reliable cycling, excellent charging and case fill, and ballistics that lend themselves to a range of popular loads. Sport Pistol’s low-muzzle-flash formulation is also optimized for polymer-coated bullets, whereas comparable powders can dissolve polymer coatings at the bullet base during ignition.

Alliant Powder
Alliant has come out with a new pistol powder with a burn rate
very close to it’s own Power Pistol and I dont know why. I went
to the 10mm pistol load data tables and saw that most of the other loads
with the other powders had been dropped and replaced with the BE-86
I have used Power Pistol and it is a powerhouse with 40 percent Nitro
and I wonder if this is a new formulation that perhaps reduces the amount of
Nitro since Power Pistol is not a very old powder. That assumes
there are some drawbacks to having a hi percentage of Nitro. Is there ?
I shot my chrony a while back and wont have a chance to compare
identical loads with PowerPistol etc. Anyone have any experience with
this BE-86 ? Seems like a strange name to me as if poor marketing
imagination etc.
Alliant Powder
There are still ‘Power Pistol load Recipes listed on the website. It seems the new powder has added flash suppressants which the other, older, powders do not. The Change in Name is understandable just form the Addition as it MIGHT affect Burn rate and performance.
Tung in cheek: Sadly they do not list it as suitable for .30 Carbine nor .32 Long colt.
Yep, reading the information, it looks like it produces a bit more velocity with less powder, e.g. 165grn GDHP 1314fps with 10grn of PP vs 1344fps with 9grns of BE-86 and has a flash suppressor added to the mix. However, I’ve got 9 lbs of Power Pistol that works great in my custom 6″ G20L so it will be a while before I’m trying any for myself.
It would be pretty remarkable if the BE-86 gives more velocity than the PowerPistol with less
powder because the Power Pistol contains a greater percentage of nitro glycerin than any
other powder on the market at 40 percent if my info is correct. So how did Alliant get this
powder to provide more velocity ?

Tried different powders for 9mm that worked fine but all had issues with metering. This one solved that problem, fine grain meters great and provides accurate loads.

This powder meters very well out of my Hornady LNL Progressive press powder hopper. It has good case volume and seems to have good and consistent ignition. The powder is similar to Power Pistol in my eyes, without the extra flash. Even with a near full charge with plated bullets in my 9mm, the cases only fly about 5 feet or so from me, making brass policing easier. I will definitely order this again…I just wish it were easier to find.

Have loaded 300 9 mm rounds an they all shot accurately. Gun was still pretty clean. Plan on getting more of this powder

My favorite powder thus far. Cool and clean burning, meters very well, and has load data for polycoated bullets! The only bad thing about it is that it’s not easy to find.
