Barnes Varmint Grenade

Originally developed by Barnes for military applications, the Varmint Grenade is a flat-base, hollow-cavity bullet with a copper-tin composite core surrounded by a substantial guilding-metal jacket. The core is highly frangible, greatly reducing the chance of possible ricochets. The new bullet remains intact at ultra-high velocities, yet fragments explosively on impact, delivering spectacular results. The lead-free bullet virtually vaporizes ground squirrels and prairie dogs, even at extended range.

The explosive properties of this bullet produce instant fragmentation and dramatic one-shot kills. The Varmint Grenade expends its energy early, seldom exiting bobcat- and coyote-sized predators. As a result, valuable pelts are left virtually undamaged. This remarkable new varmint bullet delivers sniper-like accuracy for dependable long-distance kills.

The new Varmint Grenade is currently available as a .224-inch bullet weighing 36 grains.

It’s also factory-loaded in .223 and .22-250 Black Hills ammunition.

These were at about 120 yards. I was shooting my Encore in 223 Ackley Improved with 26 g H-322. I estimate the MV at about 3600 fps. The Barns 36 gr Grenade bullets printed about 1.5 inches left of where the 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips did. Six clicks to the right fixed that. I shot 3 ground squirrels with 3 rounds. The bullets seem to be very accurate out of my rifle. The damage to the ground squirrels was about the same as with the 40 gr Nosler BT’s. I did see a lot of dirt fly up in back of each ground squirrel.
