A great multi-purpose 209 from the good folks at Federal.

Federal 209A Shotshell Primers

For standard 1-1/8 oz loads, the primer energy makes a pretty big difference in the peak pressure. You need to follow a load manual’s instructions (whether print or online) closely. When you get down to low weight loads (3/4 oz in 12 gauge) you will want the hottest primer available because low pressure is your enemy and 3/4 oz 12 gauge loads are notoriously low pressure.

Federal 209A’s are the some of the hottest primers available so you must use them accordingly. Since I load 3/4 oz 12 gauge, Fed 209A’s are my favorite primers.

However I do reload a lot 0f .45 ACP. I can not seem to get a direct answer on this one and I have called all the manufactures of all the components that make up the load I am trying to accomplish. The question is… Can a Federal 209A primer be substituted for a Winchester 209 or Remington 209P primer? Not much data out there supporting the Fed 209A. The load is for Winchester AA 2 3/4 hull with 1 1/8 #8 shot and a WAA12 wad for Trap. Standard stuff.

When you load shotgun shells you follow the manuals exactly. Changes in any component can change the pressures significantly. Usually you can find the load for your components with different primers though you may have to adjust your powder charge or accept a slower or faster load than what you would get using the Winchester primer. If you cannot find data using your particular component mix with a particular powder DO NOT substitute primers unless it is listed as being OK in the load data publication.
